What is a storyboard?
A storyboard is a sequence of drawn or photographed panels that lays out a film, video, or animation shot by shot before it's produced. Each panel shows a camera angle, a framing, and the key action of that shot, arranged in order so a director, editor, or team can see the whole sequence at a glance — long before a camera rolls or a single frame is rendered. Storyboards are used across live-action film, animation, advertising, music videos, and increasingly for planning any kind of video content, from YouTube essays to product demos.
Why plan a sequence shot by shot?
Working out the shots in advance catches problems that are expensive to fix once you're on set or already editing: shots that don't cut together, coverage that's missing, a scene that runs too long, or camera movements that don't serve the story. A storyboard — and its moving version, the animatic — lets you test pacing and structure on paper first.
